The iPad is an excellent digital comic book device. It's thin, lightweight, and has enough storage to house Kirby and Lee's groundbreaking Fantastic Four run. But in order to read comic books on Apple's slate, you need the appropriate app (or apps!).

Fortunately, the App Store has a well-stocked selection of digital comic book apps. Some feature integrated stores that let you make over-the-air comic book purchases, while others are standalone readers that let you enjoy DRM-free comic files (which, fortunately, are no longer uncommon). Others are publisher-exclusive apps for fans of a particular comic book house. In short, you'll want to try more than one digital comic book app to find the ones that best suit your needs.

If that sounds like a lot of effort, don't fret; I've done the work for you. I volunteered to take on the incredibly difficult chore of reading my favorite comics on a wide variety of digital comic book apps, so I could recommend the best of the best. This is the type of reader love you'll find at PCMag.com.

Comics (Comixology)
Free
Comixology, in an attempt to wrest money from Apple's pockets, now requires its fans to buy their favorite digital titles using a Web browser. Despite the mildly annoying change, Comics for iPad is still the best all-around reader/marketplace combination for iOS users who read books from multiple publishers, thanks to its convenience and frequent sales.
YACReader
$1.99
Does the iPad need yet another comic reader? The answer is a resounding 'yes.' YACReader (which literally stands for Yet Another Comic Reader) is a feature-packed iPad app that's one of the best mobile comic readers on the market. YACReader lacks an integrated store, but the app supports numerous comic-friendly file formats, import methods, and reading styles. Digital comic book enthusiasts, YACReader is well worth a purchase.

Comic books as a medium seem tailor-made for tablets, even if the timeline doesn’t precisely add up. But there are a surprising amount of comic reading appli. Comic Book Reader (or C.B.R.) by Guillaume Waser is an open source application that allows you to open and read various types of digital comic books. Sadly, there is no version of Comic Book Reader for Mac available on the Internet. If it's a good comic reader, it'll be smart enough to reverse page order so you can read the comic Manga or American style (back-to-front or front-to-back). Mac Comic Book Readers Comical and FFView are most likely the old school solutions you're likely to come across when perusing comic software for the Mac. For me, YAC Reader has always been the best comic book reader available on Mac. Apart from Mac, it is also available for Windows and Linux. YAC Reader is the complete package as far as comic readers are concerned.

ComicRack
$7.99
ComicRack is relatively expensive dedicated digital comics reader, but the app lets you deftly read and manage a wide variety of DRM-free file types. ComicRack also has excellent page scrubbing that lets you see which pages you're rifling through. ComicRack suffers from occasional lag when you turn pages, but it's a very solid read app.
Marvel Unlimited
From $9.99 per month
Marvel Unlimited, the comic book publisher's all-you-can-read subscription service, lets superhero fans page through decades of Marvel Comics history for the price of a single trade paperback per month. Marvel Unlimited's performance may be a bit pokey at times, and it doesn't have the most recent comic releases, but it offers the best bang-for-the-buck in the digital comics apps space.
Dark Horse Comics
Free
Comixology's Comics app may be the premier marketplace for purchasing digital comics, but that hasn't prevented Dark Horse Comics from forging ahead with its own store. Dark Horse Comics iPad app does many things right—there are tons of free comics and even content from Dynamite Entertainment (publishers of The Boys and Game of Thrones)—but its sluggish performance may have you looking to try out other readers.

Comic Book Reader For Macintosh

A comic book archive or comic book reader file (also called sequential image file) is a type of archive file for the purpose of sequential viewing of images, commonly for comic books. The idea was made popular by the CDisplay sequential image viewer;[1] since then, many viewers for different platforms have been created.

Design[edit]

Book

Comic book archive files mainly consist of a series of image files with specific naming, typically PNG (lossless compression) or JPEG (lossy compression) files, stored as a single archive file. Occasionally GIF, BMP, and TIFF files are seen. Folders may be used to group images. Also it can contain optional metadata stored as XML file, but there's no open format or DTD schema for it.

The filename extension indicates the archive type used:

  • .cb7 → 7z
  • .cba → ACE
  • .cbr → RAR[2]
  • .cbt → TAR
  • .cbz → ZIP[3]

Comic book archive files are not a distinct file format; only the file name extension differs from a standard file of the given archive type.

Comic book archive viewers typically offer various dedicated functions to read the content, like one page forward/backwards, go to first/last page, zoom or print. Some applications support additional tag information in the form of embedded XML files in the archive or use of the ZIP comment to store additional information.[4] These files can include additional information like artists, story information, table of contents or even a separate text layer for comic book translations.[5]
